When I walked with Jesus I followed him gladly;

When I heard him say it could all turn out badly,

This is the distress cry of a disillusioned woman and, as such, is one of the most moving songs in this musical. Mary sings in the garden in Bethany, agonising over the death of Jesus and questioning all her hopes and beliefs. In the last verse, Martha brings news of the resurrection and the tone rises to one of triumph and rejoicing as the full choir joins in.
