They found hairs on him belonging to the murdered man's cat...

The cat's whiskers

Forensic proved he'd been at the scene by the cat hairs found on his trousers but when confronted he just shrugged. He liked cats and it had rubbed against him that Tuesday so what! He hadn't touched Sammy in fact the nearest he got was the door step and Sammy had barely cracked open the door.

The police new there was a history of bad blood between them, fights over women and loans.

The pathologist could only give a vague time of death, late Wednesday night early Thursday morning, it being summer hot and humid.

DC Colly spoke to the old dear next door, gaga she might be but a cup of tea was a cup of tea. No she hadn't seen anything, kept herself to herself she did, men, you couldn't trust them, present company excepting. She thought at first he was looking for slugs under the rhubarb, little beggars they were, decimated her lettuces and cucumbers horrible things to get rid of. She had called out a good morning but when he didn't answer she took herself off, it was only when she returned to peg out her washing that she noticed him still lying there, that's when she called the ambulance, no she didn't go round or disturb anything after all if he hadn't moved in two hours he wasn't going to move now was he? She hadn't seen anyone else. DC Colly told her they knew a visitor had been there on the Tuesday and they had found hairs on him belonging to the murdered mans cat. He thanked her for the tea and got up to go, she followed him out and down the front path. When he turned to say goodbye, she looked at him her face puzzled, was it Tiddles hairs they found on that man she asked? 'Oh yes' he said they had checked. 'Can't have been' she said, 'Tiddles had been at the vets all week and him next door didn't bring him back until the Wednesday morning'….
