Australia
Great Ocean Road

The Great Ocean Road is the headline feature on this tourist route, and it is spectacular. Huge cliffs and empty beaches cry out to be photographed and enjoyed, while a wander among the rock pools reveals colourful anemonies and a treasure of miniature delights.

(above) The Erskine falls, near Lorne, is just one of the sideshows to be found close to the Great Ocean Road. Well worth a diversion.

(left) You could easily drive past Maits Rest without noticing, but if you do, you will have missed a treasure. Turn off the road into what looks like an ordinary lay-by. Follow the signs and you find yourself walking through a natural rainforest, altered only by the helpful addition of a few boardwalks. The sight, the silence and the fresh smell provide a memorable multi-sense experience.

All the brochures draw attention to the Twelve Apostles - a series of rock stacks, cut off from the cliffs by wave erosion. I couldn't find twelve of them, so I guess they lost some in a storm! The wind was a bit too bracing when this photo was taken. Don't suppose that Australia will always give you sunshine.
This picture looks confusing, and so was the sight itself. The pool in Tantoola cave reflects so perfectly that it looks as if there is another cavern beneath your feet. The Blue Lake really is this colour. Just outside Mount Gambier, near the western border of South Australia, this crater lake is coloured by naturally occuring chemicals.

The Murray River (above) is the major watercourse of South Australia.

Grass Trees (above) - a splash of green in a brown landscape - although sometimes these appear in rainforest settings.
<-Left... Tower Hill, near Warrambool is a wildlife park located inside an extinct volvanic crater. The road into the park runs alongside this cliff showing the layers of lava and ash from numerous past eruptions. You can inspect the cliff side and count the layers.
