Melbourne and Adelaide

Our trip started in Melbourne (pictures above and right). It is the capital of Victoria and it's kept in good shape. The trams can be awkward for a newcomer - they expect you to have the exact fare to put in the machine and they don't give change. Traffic drives on the left, which is comforting for UK visitors...

This tower stands over the city's main concert hall - a site to browse around even when there are no events on.

... but don't imagine that the cars will behave the same as in your home city. At traffic lights, cars can turn left on Red - and there's a lot of cars in Melbourne. You need to watch your step.

Call me prejudiced, but I prefer Adelaide. It is altogether a more gracious town (pictures left) and moves at a slower pace. I like to walk, and you can do that with less anxiety in the elegant capital of South Australia.

The house in the picture on the left is typical of Adelaide buildings of a certain age, and conveys something of the syle of the city. It has a fine central park ranged on both sides of the river where you can stroll quietly or take a boat ride (self drive or tour) and wonder at the colourful birds that come in to share the lushness of the town.
