Sedona and Red Rock Country

Coming down from the hills at Jerome you catch your first glimps of Sedona and it's hard to take my eyes off it as you travel across the valley along State Highway 298. Sedona is a ruby-coloured wonder, dominating its surroundings. They call this area "Red Rock Country". What wonders a little rust can do to a landscape!
view across Sedona
Sunrise over Sedona's hills
Rust? Yes, that's chemically correct, but it scarcely conveys the richness of colour that surrounds Sedona. Changing light produces subtle variations, so it is worth climbing a vantage point to catch the sunset. Try the view from the Airport Mesa, a tabletop ridge where (you guessed it) the local airport is sited. It is nearby, has a decent parking area, and gives a commanding view of the town. If you can stomach early mornings sunrise presents stunning views of colour and light.
Prickly Pear cactus
a feature of Red Rock drive
There is quite a lot of greenery around here, but it has to fight for water. Prickly Pear cactus finds a contented niche here at the foot of some typical red rocks. The Red Rock scenic drive, signposted from the southern edge of Sedona, provides strikingly beautiful views and the chance to get close to the scenery.
Sedona river
Sedona river
To an otherwise parched valley the river brings life, greenery, birds and a welcome coolness. Without the water this would still be an amazing scene. With it the sight is richened and made beautiful.
Linger a while by the stream and enjoy the atmosphere. The short walk from the car park at the extremity of Red Rock Drive leads to a place of contentment.
Sedona is much more than a scenic drive or walk. It is quite a big town and is still expanding fast. The local Real Estate offices are doing good business attracting newcomers to buy their own part of this little heaven. The town (named after the founder's wife) now stretches up into Oak Creek Canyon and is full of hotels, restaurants and all you might need to make this your touring centre for the region. It also holds a special place in 'New Age' culture, offering several local sites which are designated 'vortexes' and believed to be spiritually uplifting. It's hard not to be uplifted in such surroundings, without crystals, chanting or complex theories to enhance the effect. Many Americans would like to spend their retirement in Sedona. Pay it a visit and you'll see their point.
