This was not the place for a
domestic argument
Holiday Snaps
They sold doors, big doors and little doors, wooden doors, plastic
doors, metal doors and fire doors, revolving doors and up and over
garage doors, doors of every shape and design. In fact they sold
so many door options customers sometimes left on the verge of a
breakdown.
Mr Lothian had been with the lady for about twenty minutes, she
was replacing the internal doors in her house, fifteen in all and
possibly two external doors. Two of the internal doors needed cat
flaps suitable for a large cat or small dog. She had two cats 'Loopy'
and 'Lou' plus two dachshunds 'Boris' and 'Adolph' and if she took
up the external door option one of those must have a similar cat
flap. Mr Lothian made notes and could see notes. He would be in
for a tidy commission on this one.
After choosing the doors and fittings Mrs Lofthause also took up
the offer on the external doors and asked Mr Lothian for his company
craftsmen to fit all the doors. This was the icing on the cake.
When all was agreed it was just a matter of entering up the order
and taking a payment, normally a deposit was acceptable but because
of the size of the order and the specialities she had asked for
a 90% down payment would be needed, the final 10% to be paid on
completion of the work to her satisfaction.
As they set off for Mr Lothian's work station Mrs Lofthause stopped
by a display of hung doors, he pointed to one which she had chosen
from the catalogue and opened it with a flourish. Mrs Lofthause
thanked him and smiling stepped through it, the door with its hidden
springs closed silently behind her. Mr Lothian smilingly opened
the door but Mrs Lofthause had disappeared!
She did not come back. Though Mr Lothian opened and closed the door
many times Mrs Lofthause did not return. The security video showed
her entering the doorway but there were no pictures of her after
that.
Mr Lothian spent long sleepless nights worrying about Mrs Lofthause
and her pets. He had no address details, she was not in any of the
phone books, the police insisted there had been no enquiries and
she was not listed as missing. He tried tracing her through the
Cats Protection League the RSPCA and the Kennel Club but to no avail.
Later the display of hung doors was dismantled following Mr Lothian's
complaint that he couldn't afford to loose customers like that
